Miami-Dade County, FL - A South Florida man has been convicted of murder for fatally shooting his neighbor nine years ago during a dog poop dispute.

Last week, prosecutors announced that 75-year-old Omar Rodriguez has been found guilty of second-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Rodriguez opted not to testify in his trial, leaving jurors to decide his fate based on witness accounts and closing arguments.

During his trial, prosecutors detailed how Rodriguez fatally shot his neighbor, 52-year-old Jose Rey, during a Father's Day argument in 2015 after Rey's dog tried to use the bathroom on Rodriguez's son's lawn.

The defense argued Rodriguez acted in self-defense, claiming animosity between the two was fueled by neighbors who disliked Rodriguez.

However, the judge rejected a "Stand Your Ground" defense and the jury found Rodriguez guilty.

His sentencing is set for June.

The 75-year-old faces a minimum of 16 years in prison, up to a possible life sentence.

The defense plans to appeal last week's conviction.

The victim's widow expressed relief at the verdict, calling Rodriguez an "animal" who shouldn't be free.
